A tan is not a glow; it is UVA damage the skin has already recorded. In India, where the sun is strong for ten months of the year, sun damage shows up as tan lines, dullness, uneven tone and, later, dark spots and fine lines. Prevention is one product; repair is two more and some patience.
SPF 50+ PA++ every morning, two finger-lengths for face and neck, fifteen minutes before going out, reapplied every two to three hours outdoors. Mineral filters, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, suit sensitive and acne-prone skin and reflect UV from the surface. Arms and the back of the neck tan fastest on a two-wheeler; sunscreen goes there too, and so does the body lotion afterwards.
Repair: glycolic acid and vitamin C
Tan sits in the dead surface cells, and glycolic acid loosens them so they shed. Two or three nights a week of the 5% glycolic acid serum lifts surface tan and the rough texture sun leaves behind, with 5% niacinamide in the same bottle keeping the barrier calm. In the morning, the 10% vitamin C serum brightens dull skin and defends against the day's exposure. Expect brighter skin in two weeks and more even tone in four to six.
Glycolic acid makes skin more sun-sensitive, so it only belongs in a routine that already includes daily sunscreen. Never on the same night as retinol or salicylic acid.
What does not work
Scrubs, lemon, bleach creams and anything sold as de-tan in an hour. Physical scrubbing inflames skin and darkens it further on deeper skin tones. Lemon is photosensitising. Bleach damages the barrier. The slow routine above is the one that leaves skin better than it found it.
Reapplying in real life
Most Indian sun exposure is not a beach day; it is a two-wheeler commute, a seat by the office window, the school pickup and an hour on the terrace. Sunscreen applied at 8 am has largely worn off by 1 pm, so a second application over makeup, a sunscreen stick in the bag, and a cap or dupatta on the ride are what keep the morning's work going. Arms, the back of the neck and the hands tan fastest on a bike and are the easiest to forget.

Does glycolic acid remove tan?+
It lifts the tanned dead cells from the surface over two to four weeks of use, two or three nights a week. It does not undo deeper sun damage, which is why sunscreen comes first.
Sunscreen indoor mein bhi lagana chahiye?+
Agar aap khidki ke paas baithte hain ya din mein bahar aate jaate hain, haan. UVA sheeshe se aar paar jaata hai. Ghar ke andar, bina khidki ke, zarurat nahi.
Can vitamin C be used on sun-damaged skin?+
Yes, in the morning under sunscreen. It brightens, helps fade sun spots and adds antioxidant protection. Skip it on the mornings after a strong acid night if your skin feels sensitive.
