Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin reacts: it stings, flushes, itches or breaks out when other skin would not. Usually the barrier is the problem, thinned by harsh cleansers, over-exfoliation or weather, so the routine that helps is the one that does less, more consistently.

Products for sensitive skin

Fewer products, fewer surprises

A gentle cleanser in the evening and water in the morning. The 10% niacinamide serum, which calms redness and supports the barrier while it hydrates. A simple moisturiser. A mineral sunscreen, because zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on the skin rather than being absorbed, which is why they are the usual choice for reactive skin. That is the whole routine for the first month.

How to add an active without a reaction

One at a time, after a 48-hour patch test on the jawline, twice a week to start, and never two new things in the same fortnight. Vitamin C at 10% is a reasonable first active once skin is calm. Glycolic acid once a week comes later. Retinol at 0.2% with a moisturiser sandwich is possible for many sensitive-skinned people, but it is the last thing to add, not the first. Salicylic acid stays a spot treatment.

What to look for on a label

Fragrance-free where possible, a short ingredient list, a stated percentage for every active so you know what you are applying, and dermatologist testing. What to avoid: physical scrubs, alcohol-heavy toners, hot water, and any product that promises results in a week; speed and sensitivity do not mix.

When it is more than sensitivity

Redness that stays for days, flushing across the cheeks and nose with visible small vessels, scaly itchy patches, or a sting from plain water are signs of rosacea, eczema or a damaged barrier rather than ordinary sensitivity, and no routine on a product page replaces a dermatologist for those. Stop every active, keep the gentle cleanser, moisturiser and mineral sunscreen, and book the appointment. The routine here is for skin that reacts, not skin that is unwell.

Often, at 0.2%, with moisturiser before and after and twice a week to start. Add it last, after the skin has been calm on the basic routine for a month.
