The Best Time to Apply Body Lotion for Softer Skin
Updated 5 min readBy Kishmi
know when to apply body lotion, and when the best time is to apply it, during the day or night.

You shower. You dry off. You get dressed.
And somewhere in between, body lotion is either applied quickly… or completely forgotten.
Most of us know that body lotion is supposed to “moisturise” the skin. But there’s more to it than simply applying lotion whenever your arms or legs start looking dry.
When you apply it, how you apply it, and how consistently you use it can influence how moisturised and comfortable your skin feels.
So, when is the best time to use body lotion? And what can actually change when you start using it regularly?
Let’s get into it.
First, Why Does Your Body Need Moisturiser?
We tend to give our face all the attention.
Cleanser? Check.
Serum? Check.
Moisturiser? Obviously.
Meanwhile, our arms, legs, elbows and knees are expected to survive on shower gel and good luck.
The skin on your body can lose moisture too. Weather, hot showers, harsh cleansers, low humidity, and everyday environmental exposure can contribute to skin feeling dry, tight, or rough.
A good body lotion, such as Kishmi Body Lotion for Dry Skin, helps replenish moisture and reduce water loss from the skin, helping it feel softer, smoother, and more comfortable.
And you don't necessarily have to wait until your skin looks visibly dry to start using one.
So, When Is the Best Time to Apply Body Lotion?
Right after your shower.
Not 30 minutes later.
Not when you're already dressed.
Ideally, apply your body lotion within a few minutes of showering, after gently patting away excess water.
Here's the important part:
Don't wait until your skin feels completely dry.
Applying moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp can help trap some of that moisture.
Think:
Shower → Pat dry → Kishmi Body Lotion → Done.
It's one of the easiest ways to turn something you're already doing into a better body-care routine.
Why Does Skin Sometimes Feel Dry After Showering?
It sounds strange.
You just spent ten minutes surrounded by water. How could your skin possibly feel drier afterwards?
Water itself isn't necessarily the problem.
Long, very hot showers and strong cleansers can strip away some of the oils that help protect the skin's moisture barrier. Once you step out, water on the skin also begins evaporating.
That's why some people experience that familiar:
“Why does my skin suddenly feel tight?”
feeling after bathing.
Following your shower with moisturiser can help counteract that dryness.
What Happens When You Start Using Body Lotion Regularly?
Don't expect one application to completely transform your skin.
Body lotion works much better as a habit than an emergency treatment.
After applying it
You may immediately notice that your skin feels:
Softer • Smoother • Less tight • More comfortable
These are primarily the effects of adding and retaining moisture.
With consistent use
The changes can become more noticeable.
1. Rough areas may feel smoother
Elbows, knees, heels, and legs can become particularly rough.
Regular moisturising helps soften these areas and improve how the skin feels.
2. Dryness may become less noticeable
Instead of waiting for flaky or uncomfortable skin and then reaching for lotion, consistent moisturising helps maintain hydration.
3. Skin may look more supple
Dry skin can sometimes appear dull or textured.
Well-moisturised skin reflects light differently, which can give it a naturally smoother, healthier-looking appearance.
4. Your skin barrier gets some much-needed support
Your skin barrier helps keep moisture in and external irritants out.
A suitable moisturiser can support that barrier by reducing moisture loss and replenishing ingredients the skin needs to remain comfortable.
Morning or Night, Which Is Better?
Both can work.
The best routine is ultimately one you'll actually follow.
Morning
Apply lotion after your morning shower to start the day with moisturised skin.
If your arms, legs, shoulders, or other areas will be exposed to sunlight, follow with broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin.
Night
Nighttime is perfect if you prefer turning body care into a wind-down ritual.
Apply lotion before bed, paying a little extra attention to areas prone to dryness.
And if you shower at night?
Even better.
Shower → Lotion → Bed.
Simple.
What About Winter?
This is when many people suddenly remember that body lotion exists.
Cold weather, lower humidity, and hot showers can make dryness more noticeable, so your skin may need richer or more frequent moisturisation.
But body lotion isn't only a winter product.
Air conditioning, sun exposure, frequent bathing, and naturally dry skin can make moisturisation useful throughout the year.
Your skin doesn't check the calendar before becoming dry.
Are You Applying Enough?
Another common mistake is moisturising only the visibly dry areas.
Instead, apply lotion across your body and give extra attention to places that tend to become rougher, including:
Elbows • Knees • Hands • Legs • Heels
Massage the lotion gently until it is absorbed.
You don't need to aggressively rub your skin; the goal is moisturising, not polishing a table.
Body Lotion Doesn't Need to Be Complicated
Body care has become another category where we're constantly told we need another scrub, active, treatment or ten-step routine.
You really don't.
A good starting point is simply:
Cleanse gently. Moisturise consistently. Protect exposed skin from UV.
That's it.
Because skincare shouldn't stop at your jawline.
If there's one habit worth remembering, make it this:
Apply your body lotion after showering, while your skin is still slightly damp.
Do it consistently rather than waiting until your skin becomes extremely dry.
Over time, you may notice skin that feels softer, smoother, less dry, and more comfortable.
Your face gets its moisturiser every day.
Maybe the rest of your skin deserves the same energy.
